2011 Lake Pine Swimming Program

This July, a Red Cross swimming program will be offered during the weeks of July 11th –22nd.The lessons will be held mornings at the Main Beach on Taunton Blvd. and are available to residents with beach tags. The sessions and times are listed below. Students are grouped by ability in each class and ages may vary depending on skill. (Note - age does make a difference in the ability to coordinate, maintain endurance, & attention and it takes a lot of repetition and practice to develop efficient & safe swimming ability) Safety skills and good stroke mechanics will be stressed.

The program began in 1974 and is conducted by Pat Yurcho, WSI with the Burlington County American Red Cross, and retired public school teacher.  Call (856) 983-4483 or email: pyurcho@yahoo.com with questions.

CLASSES AVAILABLE:

9:45-10:15 AM: STROKE IMPROVEMENT / REFINEMENT(For students who have had lessons and are very comfortable in deep water without swim aids.) The major swimming strokes will be reviewed and taught including front and back crawl, sidestroke, breaststroke, backstrokes, survival skills, etc.  Students will have the opportunity to learn, review, and/or refine their skill of these strokes to develop more efficiency in the water. (Approx. ages 8-12)

10:30-11 AM:  STROKE READINESS / PRACTICE(limit 10) This class is for children who are not afraid to submerge and will lift their feet off the bottom and swim underwater and do a “doggie paddle” and/or over arm stroke.  Many are comfortable in deep water (especially with aids) but have not mastered stroke mechanics and rely on their “doggie type” stroke to swim with head out of the water.  They should be able to hold their breath and float for approx. 10 seconds.  Skills taught will include rhythmic breathing, front crawl, back strokes and intro to other strokes.  Emphasis is on skill development for greater efficiency of movement in the water to swim without aids in deep water. (Approx. ages 6-8)

11:15- 11:45 AM:  WATER EXPLORATION/ PRIMARY SKILLS (LIMIT 6) This class is for children who are pre-K – 1st and have had some swimming experience and will put their face in the water, may submerge and swim underwater, and may lift their feet off the bottom and try to swim. Progressions to the front and back float are taught as well as breath holding, submerging, and basic arm strokes. Once they are comfortable lifting their feet and submerging-basic front and back strokes introduced. (Approx. ages 4-6)

Noon- 12:30 PM:  WATER EXPLORATION/ SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR THE BEGINNER(LIMIT 6)Same as above, but student is younger and may be reluctant in and around water and may not submerge or hold face in water while breath holding or exhaling. If 4 or under, may submerge and kick but really does not swim on top of the water without swim aid.  (Approx. ages 3 ½- 5)  Attention to directions is key for learning at this age and parent may need to come in water to help their child “stay on task”.
